The Wayland girls’ varsityimg soccer team won its pre-district contest 6-0 against Hastings Tuesday evening to advance to the Division 2 district semifinals.

The Wildcats started off hot as Ashlyn Schafer opened up the scoring just 6 minutes into the match on a pass from Brinley Nieuwenhuis. Haley Thelen waited only 6 more minutes to double the lead as she shot from distance and found the far side netting for a beautiful second goal.

Schafer and Nieuwenhuis connected again on a corner kick for the third goal of the game, 4 minutes later, as Schafer finished off a great ball from Nieuwenhuis on the set piece. The half concluded with Brinley adding her third assist of the half when she hustled to keep a ball alive and found senior Ali Cutler wide open in front of goal to take the lead to 4-0 at halftime.

Coach Ben Sleeman said, “The second half saw a much more even game but the Wildcat offense was too much for the Saxon defense to handle as they found the back of the net twice more; Ali Cutler from Ashlyn Schafer and a late penalty kick goal from Brinley Nieuwenhuis finished the game off with the final score of 6-0.”

The Lady Wildcats, now 9-10-2 overall for the season, travel to Mattawan Thursday to face off against Gull Lake at 3 p.m. in district semifinal action.
