The Lady Wildcats took another win on the lanes Wednesday, 23-7 vs. Kenowa Hills at Westgate.

However, the boys’ squad dropped a 29-1 decision to the Knights.

“It was a bit of a rocky beginning, as our ladies had a slow start and lost the first Baker game,” said coach Eric Bottrall. “We found ourselves down 4-0. That was the last time we trailed as Wayland took the second game by enough pins to take total.”

Josie Melinn rocked it out the afternoon with her new bowling ball and took both of her match points to help her team. Bella Harnish and Kadence Bottrall followed suit to take both of their match points as well, as did sophomore Breanna Hyde.

After capturing their first dual match victory Monday, unfortunately the success didn’t carry over to Wednesday afternoon.

“We bowled on a little longer oil pattern and didn’t adapt well,” said coach Sherry Miklusicak. “Our guys are just a bit less experienced with adapting. Your coach can tell you to slow down a bit, play straighter up the lane, and or slightly angle the ball into the pocket – but it is easier said than done.”

The bright spot of the evening was that new bowler and basketball player Tyler Omness, son of former ladies’ coach Mike Omness, recorded the highest scores in both match games. He also took the lone match point.

“We are glad to have him and wish we had him four years ago!” Miklusicak added.

“It is always heartwarming taking my boys to the lanes my dad bowled on for many years. Today’s highlight was seeing dad’s picture hanging in the Grand Rapids Bowling Hall of Fame showcase.

“Some of Junior Markie Musgrave’s mannerisms on the lanes makes me think of my dad. Tonight it was just that confidence on a good shot. Watching the ball approach the pocket with that good turn and roll with just a little bend in the knees after and ‘pulling the trigger’ with the right arm — not cocky or anything —just enjoying the success of the sport!”

Both the girls’ and boys’ teams will be off to Hudsonville Lanes Saturday for their first tournament of the season.
