The Wayland girls’ basketball team defeated O-K Gold  Conference rival Kenowa Hills 56-44 Tuesday night to go over the .500 mark at 6-5 overall.

Hopkins girls continued their recent surge with a 44-41 triumph over Comstock Park to claim their fourth straight win after starting their season at 0-5. However, the hard times for the Viking boys continued with yet another close loss, 48-47 at the hands of the Panthers, absorbing their sixth straight setback, the last two by one point.

The Lady Wildcats and Kenowa had and back-and-forth push and pull kind of ballgame until late when they pulled away.

Junior Harmony Laker, who scored 32 and 34 points in two game last week, again led Wayland with 26 points. Senior Reese Coughlin came up with 15 points and freshman Marissa Ainsworth chipped in 9.

The Wildcats now are 3-1 in league play this season.

The Knights, with the defeat, fell to 7-3 on the season overall.

Kenowa boys downed Wayland 72-52 to drop the latter’s overall season record to 2-9.

All four games were played despite poor road conditions and frigid temperatures outside.
