Lane Button. Wayland’s only individual state wrestling champion, did a repeat performance from a year ago by capturing the Division 2 state title Saturday at Ford Field with an 11-4 decision over Dylan Granger from Mason in the final round at 150 pounds. Button was undefeated in his matches last year as a junior and pulled off that feat off again, going 48-0 for the season.
Congratulations Lane! Few people not involved in the wrestling world understand what an outstanding accomplishment this is. I have watched and helped many wrestlers that worked hard and were dedicated but fell short of a state championship. That they fell short of the final goal doesn’t mean that they weren’t good wrestlers. I know many of them today that have become outstanding men and have taken that dedication and work ethic into their daily lives.
