Martin Tuesday evening absorbed a 48-44 road loss to Southwest Athletic Conference rival Lawton in the boys’ basketball season opener.
Juniors Cayden Curry and Clayton Geerlings both contributed 11 points to lead the Clippers in scoring. Grady Lycan led the Blue Devils in scoring, also dropping in 11 points.
“Lawton did a great job of playing pressure defense, which disrupted our offensive flow.” said first year head coach Brad Moelker. Moelker, a former coach and player at Wayland, who takes the reins of a Martin team coming off a successful season, turning in a 13-10 overall record.
The Clippers ran into some free throw trouble with only a 33 percent success rate at the line.
“We were in a great position to win the game, but just could not convert from the free throw line,” commented Moelker.
The Martin boys will have a shot at SAC redemption in the home varsity double header against Watervliet Friday.
