The Wayland High School debate program was host for the annual Legislative Debate Day Wednesday, Sept. 26, for students, coaches and teachers from across the community.

Debate Day cultivates a culture of academic scholarship grounded in speaking and listening utilizing the legislative debate format. Together, students create pathways for critical thinking, civic life, collaboration and caring while having a lot of fun along the way.

The day included a meet and greet and question and answer anel with Superintendent Norman Taylor, Board of Education Members Janel Hott and Cinnamon Mellema and City Council member Jennifer Antel. The debaters then attended two breakout sessions designed to enhance their knowledge of debate before ending the day with their first West Michigan Legislative Debate League Meet.

More than 70 students, coaches and teachers attended the day-long event from the following schools: Grand Rapids City HS, Lake Michigan Catholic HS, Ionia HS, Holt HS, and Wayland Union.

Debate Day is the product of collaboration with the West Michigan Legislative Debate League and the community of coaches.
