The Leighton Township Board Wednesday evening adopted a $2.7 million budget for fiscal year 2016-17 after a special budget hearing.
The budget will cover the period between April 1, 2016, and March 31, 2017.
Revenue and expenses are up over last year by a million dollars because of the project to renovate the current township hall and move into a new facility next to the Township Library in Moline. The current township hall just isn’t big enough for officials to conduct business and for residents to attend some meetings. Though the hall was built in the 1980s, the township has grown leaps and bounds, as have needs for space.
The budget for the previous year was for $1.669 million.
The Township Board agreed to set aside more than $500,000 from the capital improvements fund and is seeking bids from area financial institutions for a $600,000. The combination of funds are believed to be large enough to cover the costs of constructing the new hall.
Expected revenues for the next fiscal year are expected to be $2,735,000 and expenses have been pegged at $2,728,130. The extra $7,570 will put into the general fund balance, which should be $735,025.
Supervisor Steve Deer said expenses for roads originally were estimated at $200,000, but that figure jumped to $350,000 because of a mandate to have work done at the bridge on 140th Avenue west of Division. Road paving also is scheduled this year for 146th Avenue.
