The Leighton Township Board Thursday evening adopted a budget of more than $2.8 million and agreed to spend $650,000 for paving roads during the 2024-25 fiscal year.

Revenues are expected to be $2.837 million and expenditures have been pegged at $2.834 million with the leftover fund balance estimated at $1,387,821.

The board’s estimated $650,000 for roads, which includes the annual one mill levy, is expected to be used for paving 137th Avenue from 9th Street to Kalamazoo Avenue, finishing the job that was started a year ago; paving 9th Street north from 144th Avenue, and 9th Street from 140th Avenue to 137th Avenue. Included is a $327,000 in the annual road millage levy.

In other business Thursday night, the board:

• Approved budget adjustments spending $55,765 more than expected for the 2023-24 fiscal year budget.
• Approved lawn mowing contracts with Triple J for the Hooker Cemetery and the outside of the softball fields at the Moline Park, with DH Lawn Care for the township hall and library, and with Potts for the Green Lake Park and fire stations No. 1 and 2.
• Agreed to continue the meetings scheduled for the second Thursday of each month except for Aug. 15 instead of Aug. 8 and Feb. 6 instead of Feb. 13, 2025.
• Was told by Fire Chief Matt Weston that the department recently experienced “the busiest February in Leighton history.”
• Learned that the Planning Commission on Feb. 14 granted temporary approval for plans for further expansion at the Galloway Landings air park.
• Was told the township granted five building permits in February, bringing the year’s total to 10 over two months.
• Heard comments from Planning Commission member Steve Shoemaker, who said he’s worried about Green Lake Sewer Authority’s ability to handle the continued population growth in the Paris Ridge development area.
• Learned the township expects to pay $744,470 for police and fire services in fiscal year 2024-2025.
