The architecture and engineering company C2AE, Thursday night described how they will help the Leighton Township Board develop a master plan for the township park.
The firm is gathering data on the softball park on 144th Avenue is seeking information about what improvements the township wants for the park. One of the improvements that was deemed important by the board and C2AE was the need for it to be more handicap accessible. However, some on the board have expressed concerns about the potential vandalism that occurs at public restrooms.
New playground equipment, nature trails and a dog park were also suggested as some additional improvements. The group will be working with the township over the next several months to develop a master plan for the park.
In other business, it was announced that assessor Laura Stob is resigning as of June 15. The board will make an offer to her assistant for the position. The board may need to have a special meeting to finalize the appointmentr.
The Fire Department reported its call numbers were up, due in part to the storm that hit the area last month. They are currently at 270 calls for the year, which is a 27% increase over the same time last year.
Sheriff Department deputies reported that home and industrial thefts were up in the area. They are increasing patrols in the area, but asked for help from the community. Keeping garage doors closed was mentioned, but also being careful what is posted on social media. The deputy explained that thieves are using garage sale posts on Facebook to target their next victims.
Deputies also asked that if you see something, call the non-emergency number to report it. The sheriff may not act on the information immediately, but they do collect the data to help them catch the perpetrators of the crimes. The non-emergency number is 616-673-3899.
