Leighton’s budget fund balance less than 1%

The Leighton Township Board Thursday night adopted an extremely tight 2025-26 budget with less than 1 percent left in its fund balance.

The board approved a budget that projects $2,758,317 in revenues, $2,758,114 in expenses and the leftover $203 in the rainy day fund.

The board also adopted a schedule for meetings in the next year to continue to be the second Thursday evening of the month except for February and April. The meetings in those months will be April 17 (because of spring break) and Feb. 5. The township hall will be closed April 8, 9 and 10 during spring break.

In other business Thursday, the Township Board:

  • Learned that the Planning Commission Wednesday evening approved an addition for the Green Lake Calvary Church.
  • Was told by Allegan County Clerk Bob Genetski that about half of the voters in the Nov. 5 general election took advantage of early voting in person and of mail-in voting.
  • Approved the Allegan. County Road Commission’s plans to work on two projects at a cost of just under $400,000.
  • Decided to seek bids on the paving project for the township hall parking lot.
  • Approved the street light budget of $34,662 for the next year.
  • Approved the capital improvement budget of $350,000 for 2025-26.
  • Approved the public safety budget of $752,545 for the next year.
  • Learned from Fire Chief Matt Weston that the department handled a record 48 calls in February.
  • Was told by Faith Miedema that the Leighton Township Library welcomed 73 children to the Valentines Scavenger Hunt.
  • Approved the quote of $18,000 from C2AE for planning services for the Moline Park.
