Local police capture DUIL suspect who fled after crash

A suspected drunken driver crashed his car on West Superior Street this morning and then fled the scene on foot, according to local authorities.

Wayland City Police said the man was unarmed, but ran west on 135th Avenue and was captured just after 9 a.m. They set up a police perimeter and alerted local schools about the situation. They aslo employed a K-9 officer for tracking.

Allegan County Sheriff’s Office, the K-9 German Shepherd Thor, and Wayland Police Officer Tom Newberry caught the suspect trying to flee from the church parking lot at 12th St and 135th after he crossed 135th.

“It appears the suspect no longer wanted to run from two determined cops and 100 lbs. of German Shepard,” one officer said.

Local motorists also were advised to take extra care while traveling went on 135th Avenue leaving the city.

Wayland Chief Mark Garnsey said Gun Lake Tribal Police had pursued the suspect, with the chase ending at Windsor Woods mobile home park.

“Excellent teamwork and collaboration by all of our partners in law enforcement,” the chief added. “Another bad guy off the streets. Sounds like some great patrol and investigative work by Tribal officers to get on the trail of this guy.”
