Longtime local business owner Fred Schwartz passes at 83

photo_20150415_WM0036152_0_photo_20150415Fred Schwartz, who with wife Mary Lou was a longtime business owner through the years in Wayland, died Monday, April 13. He was 83.

Fred and Mary Lou, his wife of 61 years, owned Fred’s Country Store, Wayland and Dorr Floral and most recently Wayland Do It Best Hardware.

He also worked for 19 years at Steelcase. Fred was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a life member of the Wayland VFW Post 7581.

He is survived by his son Bruce (Vicki) Schwartz; his grandchildren Jeremy and Jessica Schwartz; his great-granddaughter Macy; his brothers and sisters-in-law: Donald and Jeannette Schwartz and Jerry and Linda Schwartz; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by wife Mary Lou Schwartz.

Friends may visit with Fred’s family from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 19, at Kubiak-Cook Funeral Services in Wayland, 312 N. Main St., and from 11 a.m. to noon Monday, followed by a graveside service at Elmwood Cemetery with military honors.
