Kenneth “Doc” DeWeerd, age 90 of Wayland, died at his home on Wednesday, Aug. 12.
Doc was widely regarded as an icon in the Wayland community, providing his veterinary services for more than 55 years. Stories shared of how Doc saved their family’s animal, be it big or small, were shared many times with his children. His career took up most of Ken’s time but in his free time he enjoyed horses, Dixieland music, and a good scotch.
In his retirement years, he often could be seen dining for lunch at the Auction House Café.
He is survived by his children Ken DeWeerd, Marijane DeWeerd, Wayne DeWeerd, Nicholas DeWeerd and Ashley (Bob) Swainston; grandchildren Nicholas Oglesbee, Lindsay (William) Beattie, Tyler DeWeerd, Trevor DeWeerd, Kaiden DeWeerd, Gavin DeWeerd, Carson DeWeerd, Dane Swainston, Kendal Swainston; great-grandchildren Landon and Nolan Beattie; sister, Lorraine (David) Hammond; several nieces, nephews, extended family, and many friends.
He was preceded in death by parents Marion and Margaret DeWeerd; brother, Hugh DeWeerd; and sister, Melanee Kahlor.
A memorial service to celebrate Ken’s life will be held when the current Covid-19 concerns are over.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Blessed Edge AFC – a community placement home for severely developmentally disabled women, where Marijane resides: P.O. Box 377, Plainwell, MI 49080.

In your years of following community government, I was wondering who was the first woman to be appointed or voted in in Dorr Township.
Thank you for your time.
My guess would be you, as a member of the ZBA.
What does this comment have to do with a good man passing in Wayland. SAD!!!
