Longtime WHS athletic booster Bob Meconis dies at 70

Robert “Bob” Meconis, age 70, of Wayland, died Monday, May 21.

Bob was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and friend to many. He was well known in the community as a supporter of the local schools and athletics, having served once as president of the Wayland Athletic Boosters.

After graduating from Wayland High School in 1966, he was drafted into the United States Army in 1968, served in Vietnam and was a lifetime member of the Wayland VFW. Bob continued to work at Spartan Warehouse for 37 years. After retiring at 55 years old, he then worked at Yankee Springs Golf Course for 14 years where he loved to cut grass. He loved watching Wayland Athletics, Byron Center hockey, and Michigan football (when they won).

He also enjoyed many years of camping, Michigan beaches, walking the Mackinac Bridge and spending winters in Florida. He was the biggest supporter of his grandchildren in everything they did.

He celebrated his 70th birthday with family this past April 30.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years Betty Meconis, daughter Shannon (Todd) Myers, son Todd Meconis (Sarah), grandkids Olivia and Rory Myers, and soon-to-be Claire Meconis, as well as cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Leo and Betty Meconis, his brother Barry Meconis, and sister-in-law Nancy Meconis.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be scheduled at a later date. In honor of Bob, contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Byron Center Hockey Boosters, 1710 Morning Dew Drive SW, Byron Center, Mi 49315.
