The Martin girls’ junior varsity squad Friday claimed the trophy at the Mendon Holiday Tournament.

Both the Martin and Wayland girls’ varsity basketball teams stepped into the win column Friday evening.

Wayland opened defense of its O-K Gold Conference championship from a year ago by defeating Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills on the road, 62-23. Martin, meanwhile, bounced back from its first defeat of the season by taking out Centreville 40-27 in the consolation round of the Mendon Holiday Tournament. The Lady Clippers had lost 48-29 to Sturgis in the opening round Thursday.

Wayland evened its overall season record at 4-4 with little trouble.

Junior Harmony Laker again led the Wildcats’ offensive effort with 18 points, swishing three, three-point field goals. Senior Reese Coughlin added 12 points, including a couple of threes, Ava Makowski dropped in three threes for nine points, a total matched by freshman Marissa Ainsworth and Izzy Johnson nailed a three.

Also on Friday night, the Wayland boys’ varsity basketball team suffered a 92-59 defeat at the hands of Ottawa Hills. The Wildcats’ overall season record now is 1-7.
