Poor Fennville.
The Blackhawks had to face an angry Martin team that had just absorbed its first loss in more than a year. The Clippers took some of their frustration out on Fennville in a 63-6 rout that cheered up a homecoming crowd in Martin.
It wasn’t pretty from the get-go. The Clippers came out firing on all cylinders and when the dust settled in the opening quarter they were 35-6. They coasted the rest of the way after mounting a 56-6 advantage at halftime.
Martin, two-time defending state champion in eight-man football, now owns a 7-1 record and already has qualified for the post-season playoffs. The Clippers very likely would like a revenge match. against Gobles, which defeated them 20-14 only a week ago.
The Clippers will close out the regular season Friday against NorthPointe Christian, which also is playoff bound and has suffered a defeat at the hands of Gobles.
Hopkins wins up on short end of 18-0 shutout
Hopkins, like Martin, already has qualified for the post-season playoffs, but came out on the short end of an 18-0 shutout at the hands of visiting Decatur.
The game took on a weird score in the opening quarter when the Raiders kicked a successful field goal and later in the period scored a rushing touchdown and made good on a two-point conversion pass.
So the Vikings were down 11-0 at the half and then gave up seven points after that.
The lack of scoring was somewhat of a surprise, but Decatur came into the contest with a 6-1 overall record and apparently plays pretty good defense. The Raiders also are eligible for the post season.
The Vikings will close out their season next Friday Friday at Belding to take on the O-K Silver Conference leader.
Wildcats lose to Forest Hills Eastern in 48-28 shootout
The Wayland varsity football team appears to be on the bubble for its post-season playoff drive.
The Wildcats suffered a 48-28 shootout to Forest Hills Eastern Friday night and saw their overall record fall to 4-4. This makes it entirely imperative for them to defeat non-league rival Hastings in order to move to 5-4 and be considered playoff eligible.
So next Friday it will be win or go home. That may not be easy because Hastings is having a pretty successful season and is coming off an impressive offensive performance in which it scored 73 points against Coldwater.
Wayland has had a yo-yo offensive campaign this fall. This is a team that scored 49 points in one victory and 55 in another, yet it has been shut out twice, at the hands of West Catholic and Hamilton.
