Martin boys appear to enjoy hoops season turnaround

Mitchell Jager (20)

The Martin boys’ varsity basketball team has gone 6-1 since an ugly 2-8 start for the season.

The Clippers lifted their overall record to 8-9 Tuesday night with a 52-41 victory over Watervliet.
“We started out a little slow tonight, but Watervliet really out worked us at times as well. They were all over the offensive glass,” said coach Brad Moelker. “What really kept us in  the game for most of the night was our defense. We did just enough to take them out of their comfort spot, especially in that second quarter.”
The coach said Watervliet hit a big three to go up 13-6, but after that Martin’s defense stepped up to spark the team scoring 16 straight unanswered points. Mitchell Jager canned some big shots and finished on one attempt at the rim.
The Clippers trailed 13-6 at the end of the first quarter and went into intermission with a 22-13 advantage. They were up 33-25 at the end of the third period.
Jager led the individual scoring with 15 points, Cayden Curry and Collin Coburn both added 13
and Brayden Eckman 9.

“Even guys who are not getting points are understanding how to impact the game in other ways,” Moelker added. “Gabe Meyers, Travis Thorne, Keagan Wahlers… all the down our list the guys are committed to doing what our team needs.

“We have really turned the season around after starting out 2-8. We are happy, but definitely not content.  There were a lot of things from tonight’s game that we need to be better at. We just have to keep improving each game to get to where we want to be as a team.”

  1. David you may be a new journalist but you need to read this before it goes to print. The grammatical and spelling errors are awful. There is no excuse now. Any decent computer program or even a damn phone can spellcheck.
