The Martin girls’ varsity basketball team had a couple of comebacks Friday in pulling out a 40-38 thriller over Southwest Athletic Conference foe Saugatuck.
One comeback was in the game itself. The Lady Clippers fell behind 24-17 at intermission, but came from behind to win it and push their overall season record to 7-1. One big factor was their ability to make free throws, a whopping 83%, on 10 of 12 attempts.
Martin also enjoyed a 32-22 advantage on the boards.
Junior Faith Guritz enjoyed a terrific individual ballgame after a disappointing return to action a week ago. She dropped in 14 points, gathered 12 rebounds and swished all five of her free throw attempts.
Point guard Kiaya Warner scored eight points and Jaclyn Hildebrand and Natalie Yowler both added six points. Freddie Elkins had six rebounds and Yowler had five. Hildebrand came up with five steals and Warner had four.
The Lady Clippers also had a comeback from its loss to Gobles a week ago, its first loss of the season overall. Friday night was the first time they had played in a week because of the inclement weather.
Saugatuck, with the defeat, falls to 4-6 overall on the season.
