It was sweet revenge for the Martin girls’ basketball team Wednesday night in 57-53 double overtime thriller at Delton.
The Lady Clippers staged a furious rally in the fourth quarter to knot the game at 38 and then outscored their hosts by four points in the second extra session. The verdict was satisfying because Martin had lost earlier in the season to Delton, one of only two defeats this season.
It certainly wasn’t easy. The Clippers fell behind 12-6 at the end of the first period and had to rally to close the gap to 19-17 at the break. Delton used a 13-4 advantage in the third quarter to start the final eight minutes with a 32-21 cushion.
Martin came up with 17 points to the Panthers’ six in that final period to force the overtime.
Jaclyn Hildebrand came up big with 18 points, including a 9-for-12 performance at the free throw line. Kiaya Warner counted 15 points, Faith Gurtiz 11 and Briana Warner eight. Guritz had seven steals and she and Freddie Elkins had five rebounds apiece. Briana Warner also had seven steals.
The victory lifted Martin’s overall season record to 12-2, but it must face Class C powerhouse Gobles Friday night.
