Martin mourning death of high school senior ‘Mahri’

The Martin schools community is reeling from the news this morning of the death of high school senior Mahrijana “Mahri” Maya Saturday night.

Martin High School senior class president Austin Marsman posted on Facebook this morning the news of her death, but said he did not know the cause.

“Mahri joined our school family last year from Otsego, but she felt like a long-time part of our class,” he said. “As a senior, Mahri was enjoying high school and taking a class at the tech center. Life was good.

“We are all still processing the devastating news that Mahri passed away this weekend. Our hearts hurt, but heaven gained a beautiful person.”

Mahri transferred to Martin as a junior from Otsego High School.

“Those of us who were lucky enough to know her remember a fun, bright, and happy friend,” Marsman added. “Whether it was in class or in the hallway, Mahri was a larger than life person. She is, and always will be, part of our class and our Martin family.”

Marsman said arrangements are being made for counselors to be available at the school Monday morning and all students are encouraged to wear red, her favorite color, as a show of support.

Further details will be published as they become available.
