The Martin High School varsity football team lifted its overall season record to 3-0 with a convincing 52-22 triumph over the visiting Our Lady of the Lake Twin City Sharks cooperative football squad.

Hopkins 35 Wyoming Godwin Heights 14

Hopkins bounced back Friday night from last week’s loss to defeat O-K Silver Conference rival Wyoming Godwin Heights 35-14.

The victory lifted the Vikings’ overall season record to 2-1. They have won one and lost one in non-conference action.

Hopkins drew first blood in the opening quarter on a 2yard plunge by Christian Smigiel and Reed Owen booted the extra point to go up 7-0. The Vikings tallied two more TDs in the second period and were enjoying a 21-6 cushion at intermission.

Zack Wierenga took the pigskin over the goal line in the second quarter, with an extra point by Owen and Justin VanWagner scored on a 3-yard run just before the half.

Neither team scored in the third period, but the Vikings outgunned the Wolverine 14-8 in the final quarter.

Caleb Steingold hauled in a 21-yard TD pass early in the fourth period and Smigiel broke loose for a 70yard touchdown run to finish off the evening’s scoring.

Smigiel rushed for 91 yards to pace the offensive attack. The Vikings picked up 390 yards in total offense and dominated first downs 24 to 10.

Owen finished the night with a perfect five-for- five in extra points.

A. Schaendorf and J. Koperski led the team defensively in tackles and assists.

Godwin, now 0-3 for the season, had 106 yards rushing and 109 passing.

Middleville Thornapple Kellogg 28 Wayland 22

The Wildcats entered Bob White Stadium unbeaten at 2-0 and the host Trojans began the evening at 0-2. But the roles were reversed.

Wayland now is 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the O-K Gold Conference.
