A week-long ‘Penny War’ between fourth hour classes at Martin High School raised $1,939.46 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS).
“The LLS exists to find cures and ensure access to treatments for blood cancer patients, a statement on the society’s web site said. “We are the voice for all blood cancer patients and we work to ensure access to treatments for all blood cancer patients. Our mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.”
Change (pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters) meant positive points. Students and staff could also “sink” other classes by putting dollar bills in the containers for negative points.
The MHS Student Council organized, ran and encouraged people to participate in the Penny War. They are mentored by Caryn and Damon Blackburn, who teach English and social studies at Martin. On Friday afternoon, council members were busy rolling money and doing final calculations ahead of the school-wide assembly, where the winning class would be announced.
“The whole event was really competitive, and of course, the money all goes to a great cause. The Student Council chose the LLS because we believe in their mission and support their work,” said Austin Marsman, a junior and a member of the student council.
Mr. Blackburn’s psychology class won the week with 31,617 points, followed by Michael McGuire’s physical education and health class, which pulled off a last minute second place with 28,191 points.
This is the third year of a penny war benefiting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and it was the biggest year in terms of amount raised.
