The Martin Township Board Wednesday evening accepted proposed survey adjustments to the six acres of expansion of the East Martin Cemetery on the west side of 8th Street.
The Township Board brought the cemetery addition a year ago for $9,000 per acre from Hopkins Ag Center LLC because the current cemetery is just about full.
The changes go along with the Jonker Survey Co. of Grand Rapids, which was hired to do the surveying.
Treasurer Susan Tiemeyer told colleagues that the service of Sexton Cody Visser will have to put on hold for a couple of week while he recovers from an illness.
In other business Wednesday, the board:
- Received a check for $15,500 from Watson Township for Martin Township Fire & Rescue services for fiscal year 2019-20.
- Was told by Fire Chief Kurt Knight that the local department is getting busy again after a brief lull because of COVID-19.
“Calls are up,” the chief said. “It seems that people are getting out and about more.”
He added, however, that he is beginning to worry about the proliferation of grass fires as a result of a recent dry spell, which also is causing some problems with dust control.
The department in the last month has handled two house fires.
- Was told by Knight the local department now has 17 firefighters, one probationary, and four cadets.
- Learned that just about all trees in the Geib Memorial Park have been damaged.
