Another motocross track in Martin Township?

Probably not, but Township Treasurer Sue Tiemeyer Wednesday evening told her colleagues she received an inquiry about it recently from a real estate agent in the Kalamazoo area.

She said Mark Miller asked about the availability of 300 to 400 acres north of the Village of Martin. She said she couldn’t answer but told him mostly was farm land and lots of mobile homes.

Tiemeyer also noted Martin already has a small motocross business and, of course, the U.S.-131 Motosports Park.

She added she’d be surprised if anything further results, but found it interesting that the inquiry was made.

In other business at the meeting Wednesday evening, the Martin Township Board:

• Learned from Tiemeyer that the township has received an extra $12,000 in revenue sharing because of an increase in populations, as indicated in the 2020 census.

“It was a nice surprise,” she said.

• Was told by Fire Chief Kurt Knight Martin Fire & Rescue may be on the hook for a $3,500 purchase of new software because the current utility is no longer used, a classic case of functional obsolescence. The township has no choice other than buying the new updated software for the next fiscal year budget.

• Noted that the township’s annual Cleanup Day will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the JC Wheeler Library downtown. Five dumpsters will be made available.

• Noted the annual Memorial Day parade will be held at 10 a.m. downtown with Don Flowers as grand marshal.

• Learned that it might be useful to craft an ordinance on cemetery burials because of the growing popularity of cremations. Martin Township does not permit scattering of ashes in local cemeteries.
