Martin Township Supervisor Glenn Leep is not happy at all with the recent flood plain determination by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
He told his Martin Township Board colleagues Wednesday evening that he received FEMA’s inclusion of all jurisdictions in Allegan County.
“It’s not fair to everybody,” he said. “They (FEMA) are trying to box us in. We don’t want it for our citizens and our township.”
He indicated all the designation actually means is local government paying more for something that likely is not needed.
Allegan County Commissioner Rick Cain suggested Leep get in touch with Gun Plain Township Supervisor Mike Vandenberg, who has been dealing with the issue for at least four years.
In other business Wednesday, the board:
- Declared Saturday, May 22, as the date for the annual trash pickup day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the JC Wheeler Library parking lot.
- Learned from Fire Chief Kurt Knight that Martin Motorsports Park and Dorr Township are the only entities in Allegan County that will have fireworks on the Fourth of July. Knight added that the number of calls and runs for the local department has finally slowed a bit.
- Approved the appointment of Samantha Orr as newest firefighter.
- Agreed to pay the low bid of $70,864 for graveling 4,300 yards on 122nd Avenue.
- Took no action on officially naming anyone to represent the township on the Trailways Committee for a non-motorized trail, but Treasurer Sue Tiemeyer volunteered to attend the group’s next meeting.
Leep said of the project, however, “I don’t see the need. What the committee wants to do they can do without Martin Township. I’d just as soon stay away from it.”
