Martin, Wayland seniors win GFWC scholarships

Graduating seniors Kiaya Warner of Martin and Emmalee Bish of Wayland are two of this year’s winners of scholarships awarded by the general Federation of Women’s Clubs-Gun Lake Area.

Emmalee Jo Bish daughter of Karen and Jason Abram, plans to attend Douglas J. Aveda School of Cosmetology in Grand Rapids. She has been involved with her high school yearbook and digital journalism. She also served as school store manager.

She has experience as a crew member at area fast food establishments and as a cashier at local service stations. Emmalee Jo also volunteered at Ruthie’s Closet at the United Church of Wayland.

Kiaya Warner is perhaps best known as the starting point guard for the Martin girls’ basketball team that went 22-1 on a season shortened by the Coronavirus crisis. She earned all-conference honors and honorable mention all-state.

The daughter of Minda Warner, she plans to attend Grand Rapids Community College to study health science and secondary education. Kiaya has participated fouryears as a student athlete at Martin High School. She has been a member of girls’ basketball, softball, volleyball and track and field teams, and she served as captain in both basketball and volleyball. She has also been active in National Honor Society, Student Council and served as class secretary.

The GFWC-Gun Lake Area formed a working relationship in 2015 with the Barry Community Foundation to continue to benefit students in the greater Gun Lake area, including Wayland, Martin, Delton and Thornapple Kellogg.

Club members have been providing $2,000 scholarships for Gun Lake area students for the last 35 years, honoring students who have demonstrated academic success, leadership skills, school involvement and community volunteerism.
