Richard “Dick” Krup, died Wednesday, May 13, at the age of 86.
Dick served in the United States Navy from 1946 to 1953, where he was an engine room mechanic aboard patrol craft vessels. He was employed for 30 years at Pet Incorporated, which later became Dean Foods and Bay Valley Foods, where he served as a lab technician, maintenance mechanic and electrician. He was also promoted to production supervisor and assistant plant manager.
Dick finished his professional career at Haworth Office Furniture in Holland, where he served as maintenance planning manager.
As a loving and devoted husband and father, Dick was also the former owner of the Wayland Tasty Treat and worked at the Wayland Theatre in order to provide his children with college educations. He sat on the Wayland Board of Review and was the City of Wayland Volunteer of the Year in 1994.
Dick was a member of St. Therese Catholic Parish and was a member of the Knights of Columbus for more than 50 years. He considered two of his greatest accomplishments as providing the guidance and support to help his daughter, Patricia, become an elementary classroom and music teacher, and his son, Mike, to become a regional vice president for Kindred Healthcare.
Dick enjoyed woodworking, walking, golf and attending his grandchildren’s school events. He received a great sense of satisfaction in helping others and in seeing them succeed.
Dick is survived by his wife and closest friend of 65 years, Mary Krup; his children: Patricia “Pat” (Dan) Guldenzoph and Richard “Mike” (Judy) Krup; his grandchildren: Andrea, Scott, and Katherine Guldenzoph and Kristen Krup; his sister Virginia Hiemstra and his brother Robert (Ellen) Krup; several nieces and nephews; and long time devoted friend and professional colleague, Walt Kles.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Louise Krup, and his sisters Barbara Bush and Margaret Strong.
Friends may visit with Dick’s family from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 15, at Kubiak-Cook Funeral Services, 312 N. Main St., Wayland, with a rosary at 7:30 p.m.. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 .m. Saturday, May 16, at St. Therese Catholic Church, Wayland, with Reverend Father Chuck Fischer presiding, with military honors. Family will receive friends and family from 10:30 to 11 a.m. prior to the mass. Interment will be at Elmwood Cemetery.
