Steve Chappell died at his Shelbyville home Saturday, March 23. He was 75.

He was born May 21, 1948, in Kalamazoo, the son of Paul and Mary (Dommanschet) Chappell. He worked at Parker Hannifin and did taxes for many people in the area for more than 35 years. 

Steve was a kid at heart and enjoyed joking around and making others laugh. He liked being outdoors, hunting, fishing, especially for salmon on Lake Michigan, traveling out west and sailing. He was an avid reader and enjoyed listening to music and playing on his computer. He was a member of the NRA, Ducks Unlimited and St. Margaret Catholic Church in Otsego.

Steve loved his family and spending time with his grandchildren. He married Neta White on March 31, 1972, and they spent 52 wonderful years together. 

Also surviving are his children, Nate (Debby) Chappell of Allegan and Christine Garvin of Kalamazoo; grandchildren, Ethan Kelly Chappell, Emily Marie Chappell, Haydanne Christian Garvin and Brennan Steven Garvin; great-grandchild, Ty Emelander with another due soon; sisters, Denny McPherson, Terry Sapinski, Laurie Holewa. along with several nieces and nephews and his dog, Shelby. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and infant brother, Bruce. 

According to his wishes cremation has taken place. 

Friends may visit with Steve’s family from noon to 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 3, with celebrant Nyla Merrill officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Steve may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
