Memorial sevice slated for Gertrude Hoekstra

Gertrude A. Hoekstra of Portage died Thursday, Feb. 27 at Wyoming Woods in Wyoming.She was 91.

Born on Nov. 15, 1933, in Martin, she was the daughter of Sierd and Grace (Van Dyke) Hoekstra. Gertrude’s career spanned nearly half a century at Mead Paper, where she worked until her retirement in 1997 at the age of 64. Throughout her life, she exemplified hard work and commitment.

An avid golfer and bowler, Gertrude also enjoyed visits to the casino. She was a proud member of the American Legion in Schoolcraft, the Old Mill Golf Course, and Lakeland Reformed Church. Her passion for music was evident as well; she wished to be remembered singing with perfect pitch in the choirs of heaven. 

Gertrude held her Dutch heritage close to her heart, taking great pride in the traditions and values it instilled within her. Her love for family was unwavering.

Surviving are her five nephews, Randy (Dawn) Hoekstra, Todd (Sheila) Hoekstra, Albert Jr. (Patsy) Hoekstra, Rodney (Susan) Zeinstra, and Larry (Deb) Talsma along with many great-nieces and great-nephews. 

She is preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, brothers Sierd and Albert Hoekstra, and sisters Josie Talsma and Flora Zeinstra.

According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later time. Burial of ashes will take place at East Martin Cemetery.
