Incumbent Dorr Township Supervisor Jeff Miling apparently has been elected to his third term, turning back a challenge in Tuesday’s primary election from Trustee Terri Rios.

Steve Wolbrink is the apparent winner of the race for Leighton Township Supervisor, defeating former Supervisor Spencer Moore. Wolbrink had been serving as deputy supervisor for the past year and a half and will succeed Steve Deer, who chose not to run again.

The results are regarded as “apparent” because of the large volume of absentee mail-in votes that were still being counted late Tuesday evening and into Wednesday.

According to unofficial results, Miling polled 993 votes and Rios had 492. Miling was appointed supervisor in 2013 and was first elected in 2014 and again in 2016. He turned back challenges from Trustees John Tuinstra and Patty Senneker in 2014 and defeated Senneker in 2016. Rios is just completing her four-year term as a board trustee, a post for which she ran unopposed in 2016.

Meanwhile, incumbents Dan Weber and John Tuinstra and newcomers Patrick Champion and Chandler Stanton were elected to trustee seats unopposed. Myrna Marr was elected unopposed to succeed retiring Treasurer Jim Martin.

Dorr Township voters approved a three-mill levy for improving local roads 1,139 to 960 and a half-mill renewal for fire vehicles and equipment, 1,218 to 872. However, they rejected Wayland Union Schools’ request for non-Homestead millage, 799 to 675.

Wolbrink also enjoyed a hefty vote margin, 843 to 336. Moore was attempting a comeback in township affairs after he served as supervisor from 2004 to 2008, stepping down to run for state representative.

New treasurer Rachel Fennema, who succeeds Mary Lou Nieuwenhuis, who is retiring after 28 years, won the clerk’s post without opposition.

Leighton voters approved the recycling surcharge of $50 per year per household by a 819 to 713 count, but turned back the Wayland schools’ 18-mill non-Homestead millage proposal 548 to 450.

In Hopkins Township, incumbent Treasurer Sandra Morris for the third time defeated challenger Kathy Laseur, 322 to 140. Laseur unsuccessfully challenged in 2012 and 2016 as well.

Hopkins Township voters rejected, 347 to 291, a proposal for a road millage, 347 to 291, but approved the county-wide surcharge of $50 per household per year for recycling 329 to 299.

Martin Township voters approved a fire protection millage proposal 360 to 181 and the county-wide recycling surcharge proposal 284 to 250.
