City Treasurer’s firing surrounded by mystery

Cherie Parrish

The shroud of mystery pervades the City of Wayland today with the news that City Treasurer Cheri Parrish has been fired.

Parrish has been the city’s finance director since January 2013 and she was interim city manager in 2017 between the time Tim McLean resigned and Larry Nielsen stepped in to the interim post before the City Council hired Josh Eggleston.

Eggleston, when contacted today, did not give a reason, but replied, “Cheri Parrish is no longer employed by the City of Wayland and I am unable to comment on personnel matters any further.”

The move was somewhat puzzling to city government observers because Parrish almost always received glowing reviews from the city’s auditors after examining the budget.

Parrish earned her bachelor’s degree in finance from Baker College and then a master’s degree from Western Governors University in Utah.

The city treasurer prepares, mails and collects all tax bills for real and personal property located in the City of Wayland. The treasurer is also responsible for negotiating all municipal financial investments (both short and long term).
