The Wayland Board of Education Monday night made it official for purchasing construction of the new swim pool addition at the high school.
Board members voted 7-0 to approve a bid package in amount of $21,758,164. Later in the evening the board approved an updated contract with Triange Associates Inc to serve as construction manager for the district’s projects for 2023.
Also approved was an alternate bid package for the new pool addition for $33,260.
Board member Jeff Koon said it should be noted that a lot of previous work went in to approving the project costs.
“This has been years in the making,” he said. “It’s an exciting time for the district.”
He added that he is looking forward to the groundbreaking ceremony later this year.
Board member Erin Stepek added that she’s amazed at how fast things seem to be going now.
“It’s truly amazing when I think about all the pieces that are moving.”
In other business at the meeting, the school board:
• Approved the quote from Graybar for $78,762.68 to provide a new Main Distribution Panel (MDP) for Wayland Union High School.
- Approved the distribution of fund allocations from the Gun Lake Tribe Revenue Sharing Fund as follows; 21% for Instructional, 21% for Community, 44% for Public Improvement and 14% for Transportation.
- Was told by Supt. Tim Reeves that several Wayland school officials, including himself, toured the new swimming pool recently built for neighboring Caledonia Schools, which never before had such a facility.
- Learned from Reeves that he conducted a tour of the new administration building on East Superior (the former location of the U of M West Medical Building) for members of the senior citizens’ group, Leisure Life, which will use the facility’s downstairs area.
- Was encouraged by Reeves to take part in the “Dancing with the Stars” competition Wednesday, Feb. 26, though he doesn’t plan to participate.
- Learned from Reeves that local school officials are paying a great deal of attention to developments on immigration, but don’t plan to do anything until the issue is clarified or comes to an end.
