Unless something unexpected happens, new Wayland Police Chief  Mark Garnsey will be sworn in at the Monday, April 1, Wayland City Council meeting.

The City Council Monday night approved a contract with Garnsey with an annual salary of $73,000. He succeeds Steven Harper, who retied as chief in February after serving for six years, and as commander of the Wayland State Police Post before that.

Harper was in attendance at the meeting because he has not officially left the local post.

City Manager Joshua Eggleston said Garnsey has asked to have a public swearing-in at Salvino’s Restaurant April 8 with his family included.

In other business at Monday night’s meeting, the council:

• Agreed to apply for a Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) Local Street Project award grant for a match in street projects planned for later this year. The projects, including Marlo Lane, Geneva Drive, Galaxy Estates and a portion of Standish Drive, will cost an estimated total of $562,000.

• Agreed to buy an Asphalt Hot Box from ALTA, an equipment distributor of Byron Center, for $27,348 to save the Department of Public Works money in the long run.

• Was told by Eggleston that there still is one seat vacant on the city’s Zoning Board of Appeals.
