Next year’s Wayland school public improvement projects outlined

Wayland Schools Finance Director BWHS with wingill Melching Monday night outlined proposed summer 2016 projects that will be funded by the public improvements fund.

The fund, which annually amounts to about $675,000, is used primarily for repairs, upgrades and replacements of facilities and equipment. It is paid for by revenue sharing from the Gun Lake Casino and payment will be taken from the 2016-17 fiscal year budget.

The biggest expense will be $291,000 to continue paying off the new science wing addition at the high school, which was completed a little more than a year ago.

The other projects will include locker rooms for boys’ physical education, replacing lockers in the high school hallways, roof maintenance and repairs, fixing the air handler unit in the wood shop, heat pump replacement, fixing the air conditioning unit at the Fitness Center and replacing the exterior doors at the high school.

Melching noted the cost for all projects should be around $626,000, leaving nearly $50,000 in the public improvement fund. He recommended the board use that amount to continue to help pay down the expense of the science wing addition.
