Zack Nieuwkoop

Wayland High School graduates Avery Hudson and Zack Nieuwkoop have returned to play their sophomore years for the Davenport University basketball season.

Neiuwkoop, a 6-8 center, appeared in 27 of the team’s 28 games and started eight of them. He played 301 minutes, scored 105 points, snagged 51 rebounds, dished out 17 assists, had four steals and recorded nine blocks.

At Wayland he totaled more than 1,300 career points and was all-conference four times, earning all-state accolades as well.

Avery Hudson

Hudson, son of WHS head varsity coach Mike Hudson, appeared in 15 games and started 10 of them, played 379 minutes, averaged 11.3 points per game, gathered 44 rebounds, dished out 54 assists, came up with 31 steals with a career high eight steals against Goshen College on Nov. 18.

His freshman season was cut short by injury.

As a Wildcat, he was a varsity players for four years and set the school single game scoring record with 54. He averaged 15 points, five rebounds, 3.5 assists, 3.5 steals as a junior and was an all-state honorable mention and fifth team selection.
