Police raid unveils sex trafficking, drug crimes

The Wayland Police Department executed a search and seizure warrant in the 600 block of West Maple to obtain evidence of a suspected sex trafficking ring, and drug crimes.

Chief Mark Garnsey said a Wayland Police investigation had been going on since last October and evidence was gathered back to 2017.

“As evidence of suspected crimes was collected, the Michigan Stte Police and the FBI were brought in to assist… The search warrant is not the end of the investigation, as numerous other leads have been generated relative to the seized evidence.,” Garnsey said. “Officers seized suspected drug paraphernalia and suspected drugs believed to be cocaine and heroin.”

Police said numerous electronic devices were seized, containing suspected evidence of drug and sex crime violations, as well as information on additional potential suspects. The electronic devices will be sent to the Michigan State Police Computer Crimes Unit for examination.

Garnsey said the State Police, FBI and the Allegan County Sheriff’s office provided valuable assistance, as evidenced by strong presence Monday on Maple Street from Vine to Railroad streets.

The investigation is still on going and charges are pending.
