The Allegan County Sheriff’s office has reported that southbound U.S.-131 at Exit 55/Martin is closed because of a semi-truck on its side.
Deputies say if possible, please find an alternate route if needing to travel on either US-131 or I-196. The driver in the crash was reported to be OK.
A portion of the freeway southbound from the Martin exit (116th Avenue) to Plainwell was closed Friday afternoon. The sheriff’s office reported that an overturned semi-truck somewhere between Martin and Otsego caused the closure.
No major injuries have been reported and it appears the tractor-trailer was the only vehicle involved. While a cause has not been made official, whiteout conditions and slick roads are likely to blame.
The incident occured around noon and traffic was diverted through downtown Martin and onto 10th Street.
The southbound lane of the highway remained shut down as crews worked to clear the scene.
Later in the afternoon, a semi-truck slid for a bit and jacknifed in the median south of Martin Township. The incident briefly closed both lanes of U.S.-131 around the same time and place another semi overturned Friday.
Drivers are encouraged to be safe on the roads as conditions worsen. Traffic has resumed to normal as the highway has reopened.
