Painted rocks spread positivity in Martin, Wayland, Hopkins

by Austin Marsman

Take a walk around downtown Martin and other local communities and you are likely to find a painted rock. Area residents are painting uplifting phrases or images on rocks and placing them around town.

The project is still new for the community; however, it has already made a difference. From the smiles created while walking downtown to the young boy’s spirits lifted after his grandfather’s passing.

Martin Village Clerk Darcy Doezema said, “It is a great way to get people walking around, enjoying Martin.” She added that “any time you engage the community in positive activities it is a good thing.”

The Martin Michigan Positive Project was inspired by a similar effort in the neighboring city of Allegan. People are encouraged to share photos of creating, hiding, and finding the rocks on the project’s Facebook page.
