Because the annual commencement for the Wayland High School Class of 2020 has been postponed by the COVID-19 crisis, the Wayland Grad Bash Committee is planning an alternative celebration.

A parade for graduates will begin at 6:30 Thursday evening at the parking lot of the former Cars2Go on West Superior Street and proceed east to Wildcat Drive and end at the high school parking lot. The seniors will be escorted by local county, tribal and state police personnel and Wayland Fire Department members.

Sara Geers, one of the organizers of this non-school sponsored event, said, “ Let’s paint the town green! Please come out and show the seniors some love…

“Make signs decorate with chalk, ring those cowbells, anything you can do. We just ask that you observe all social distancing guidelines.”

The seniors will be prohibited from exiting any of the vehicles along the parade route until the end of the procession is reached at the high school parking lot.

Geers suggested to seniors, “You are allowed to drive yourself, but we want you to soak it all in… Ride in the back of a truck, a golf cart, convertible, etc.”

Those who need transportation arrangement may call Geers at (616) 862-0081.

Grads are asked to wear that caps, cords and gowns and parents and seniors are encouraged to decorate their cars or trucks, make and paint posters or use banners.

Geers also cautioned that the parade and celebration is not intended to be a replacement for graduation exercises.
