A Sunday morning fog south of Wayland on the U.S.-131 expressway created low visibility conditions. In the patchy, freezing fog in the southbound lane of the freeway, a  tractor trailer hit a tree south of Martin ramp at exit No. 55. Emergency personnel were on the scene and motorists were advised to slow down, move over and give them space to do their jobs safely.

The semi crashed on the west side of the highway. Upon arrival, Allegan County Sheriff’s deputies found the male driver, a female passenger, and a dog were involved in the single vehicle crash. During the investigation, the driver was taken into custody on charges unrelated to the crash.

Efforts to recover the semi were hampered by extremely poor visibility due to fog. Due to other weather-related incidents, the semi was left on the side of the roadway until visibility cleared to allow the wrecker to safely remove the semi from area it had crashed.
