Wayland Union Schools has aimage001nnounced an increase in pay rate for substitute teachers and new incentives to help ease the sub shortage most school districts in Michigan are facing.

The daily rate for day to day substitute teacher pay will increase to $80, previously $75, for a full day. Half day substitute rate for teachers will be $45, previously $40.

There also will be added incentives the more days someone subs in a month.  Those subbing 10-14 days/month will earn a $100 bonus for that month and 15+ days/month will earn a $225 bonus for working that same month.  Subs can eat free in the school’s cafeteria on the day they are teaching.  These incentives do not apply to long-term subs.

Here are some commonly asked questions that prospective substitute teachers may have:

• Do you need a teaching certificate to be a Sub?  No, if you have a teaching certificate, that’s great but it’s not a requirement. You must have an official transcript with 90+ semester credit hours and a minimum 2.0 GPA from a four-year accredited college/university.

• Do I need to have teaching experience?  No, the most important skills are empathy with students, patience and good communication skills.  You’ll need to complete several on-line training modules and attend a meeting at EDUStaff to turn in your paperwork and ask any questions you have after completing the on-line application.

• Are there any costs involved in the application process?  If you don’t have a teaching certificate, there’s a substitute teaching permit fee of $45.  The cost of fingerprinting is around $60-65.

• I wouldn’t want to have to take a teaching job too far from home and I’m not available every day.  Is that okay?  You decide when and where you’d like to sub.  You can make yourself available to only Wayland Union Schools, if you’d like. You can accept or decline any job – you can fill your days with jobs or work every other Tuesday, subbing is flexible and will work around your availability.
