Pine Street Elementary fifth-grader Summer Morrison, 5th grader at Pine Street Elementary earned the title of championship speller at the Allegan County Bee held Tuesday, Feb. 23, at the Wayland Middle School. Runner-up was Stephan Allen, a seventh-grader from East Martin Christian School. Summer made it perfect through five rounds and had the chance to win in the sixth round but misspelled the word “futon.” She stayed strong through two more rounds and eventually spelled “nightingale” for the first place finish. A dozen students in grades 4-8 participated from six area schools. Summer now will move on to the Greater Grand Rapids Spelling Bee to be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 22, at the Gerald R. Ford Museum Auditorium.
