Plainwell man charged in Martin postal driver’s death

Spencer Evan Baird, 36, of Plainwell has been formally charged in the fatal crash Jan. 6 that killed a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier from Martin.

Authorities indicate Bair is being charged with one count of moving violation causing death in a fatal crash that killed postal carrier Sheila Rackley, 55, on 10th Street between 107th and 110th Avenues in Gun Plain Township. She was stopped at a mailbox delivering mail when a pickup truck rear-ended the postal truck she was driving.

Authorities said Baird’s pickup was in the road when they arrived at the scene and the postal truck was in a ditch and on fire. Rackley was a postal worker from the Plainwell office.

Baird’s pretrial has been scheduled for Friday, March 20, in Allegan County District Court.

A U.S. Postal Service worker from Martin died Monday just after noon on 10th Street between  after a truck hit the vehicle while it was delivering mail.
