To the editor:

Mark Evans

We send this letter to urge local citizens to vote to re-elect Mark Evans as Hopkins Township Supervisor in the Aug. 6 primary.

The position of township supervisor is a thankless one. It is a challenging role that involves managing and making decisions on a variety of issues that come up daily. It is impossible to make everyone happy.

We have lived in Hopkins Township for many years. We have been blessed with very good supervisors, all of whom have been fiscally responsible and wanted to make the township a better place to live and raise our families.  Mark Evans has followed suit. He has been good for Hopkins Township.

  • He has worked with countless committees to improve our roads, parks and cemeteries.
  • He has served on the board of Wayland Area EMS as the Hopkins Township representative since 1997.
  • He has overseen many changes in the Hopkins Area Fire Department during his term. He was instrumental in expanding the fire department to include Monterey Township and worked with the fire department and the Hopkins Area Fire Board to establish a fire truck replacement program.
  • Along with Allegan County and the Hopkins Township Planning Commission, he helped establish the Hopkins Township prime agricultural land map and agricultural preservation ordinance.
  • He and the Hopkins Township board have worked with Watson Township, Monterey Township, and Hopkins Village boards to establish the Hopkins District Library. It is a wonderful asset to our community.
  • He and the Hopkins Township Board and the Hopkins Village Council established our joint community master plan that will be updated every five years at a shared cost which saves both units money.
  • He oversaw the construction of the addition to the township office/hall. The much-needed expansion project was paid for in full by township reserve funds and will serve us well for many years.
  • Mark has been diligently working to make sure that Hopkins Township is in compliance with all the state mandates for reporting, record keeping and assessment requirements.

His accomplishments speak volumes about his commitment and dedication. We enthusiastically endorse Mark Evans for re-election as Hopkins Township Supervisor.

Mark has been a friend and mentor to me even before I was a supervisor in Watson. We don’t always agree on things but he is always respectful and has the best interests of our communities in mind. I value our cross community partnerships, and I hope to work with him for another term.

Just imagine the good the people of Hopkins could have done with money from the Gun Lake Tribe and their casino, but Mark wouldn't allow it on Hopkins township property, despite what others felt.
