Selkirk.jpgThe Wayland Township Planning Commission has received a proposal from a group asking for zoning changes to accommodate a campground at the old “Warner’s Landing” campground property.

The group is proposing 126 camp sites total, though there are 25 currently.

However, opponents of the idea insist that with all the high water problems in the past and present excessive boat traffic on less than 100 acres of lake surface, this development will exacerbate the present situation on the lake.

Opponents ask why they don’t want to parcel off the property and sell them as single dwelling home sites. They assert they would be easier to get approved and they wouldn’t have to put money into developing a huge campground.

Wayland Township Planning Commission member Matt Miner confirmed there was preliminary discussion about the proposal Wednesday, but it went no further “because we hadn’t received the adequate amount of time to review material to hold a public hearing on the rezoning.”

The parcel is currently zoned R-R, R-2 and Agricultural. Campgrounds are allowed by special use permit in the R-R and Ag.

“The problem for them is the R-2 is sandwiched between the R-R and Ag,” Miner said.

He said he brought up the water problem and amount of boat traffic it will add in the summer to an already overcrowded lake. He added that thus far the commission is not favorably disposed.

“Yes there are currently 25 rustic sites,” Miner said. “They want to convert these and add 101 more. All sites would have 50amp electric, water and sewer. There would be a recreation area complete with swimming pool. They will have seasonal, monthly, weekly daily campers.

“Most of the lots on the lake would be for seasonal folks. I think four to six beautiful homes would be a much better use of the property.”

Miner said the applicants have applied to the DEQ for their campground permit, but haven’t received a result yet. They are believed to be working with the Allegan County Health Department on the water and septic system.
