It appears plans are moving ahead for a Wayland Balloonfest Saturday, Sept. 11, at Calkins Field north of town, but it isn’t known as yet whether it will include a beer tent.

The Leighton Township Board Thursday evening duly noted the hot air balloon festival is being planned and welcomed it, except it doesn’t know if a beer tent would be permitted to buy and sell the beverage.

Supervisor Steve Wolbrink said he will check with Professional Code Inspections on the matter, so the request was tabled until next month.

Anthony Winters, co-owner of the Four One Two distillery and restaurant in downtown Wayland and one of the principal organizers, said on Facebook, “We are looking for vendors for our Hot Air Balloonfest at the Calkins Airport this fall! If you would like more information please e-mail us at 4one2cares@gmail.com!

“There will also be a 5K and cornhole tournament!”

It was noted that proceeds from the event will go to suicide prevention.

In other business at the meeting Thursday, the board:

  • Was told by Faith Miedema of the Library Board that work on the building’s addition will begin Oct. 23 and the target date for completion will be in January 2022.
  • Learned from Assistant Chief Randy Jager that the new fire engine now is being contructed and the department expects it to arrive next June.
  • Approved a five-year contract with PLM Lake & Land for weed control at an annual average cost of between $16,800 and $22,400.
  • Was told by Wolbrink that the Allegan County Road Commission will seek bids on replacing the deck on the bridge on 140th Avenue.
