A fire at a house in the 2300 block of 142nd Avenue in Dorr Township Thursday morning routed a family of four.
Authorities said the fire started at about 4:40 a.m., and four area departments, Leighton, Salem Hopkins and Byron Townships, were summoned and were handling “hot spots” during much of the morning, clearing the scene at 8:30 a.m.
There were no injuries. The fire’s cause is not known.
Dorr Fire Chief Gary Fordham reported the fire was confined to an upstairs wall and attic, but the ceiling collapsed and it was likely contents of the home were lost from fire, smoke or water damage. He said a smoke alarm was instrumental in saving the lives of the four members of the family, who are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
Dorr Township Fire Department offers residents free smoke alarms and installation. They have installed about 200 free smoke alarms and will continue until supplies run out. To schedule an appointment, call Dorr Township office manager Vicki Fifelski at (616) 681-9874.
