It seems a summer of complete leisure was not in the cards for me.
Last week, one of the co-owners of the campground sent me a message asking if I would be willing to work in the campground store part-time this summer. I accepted the offer and have been working to help stock the store for the coming camping season.
I will be the first to admit that spending a few hours a day stocking shelves is kicking my backside. I’m using muscles that have been dormant for the winter. But at the end of the day it is a good tired.
The two-minute commute (if I walk quickly) is easy and the job will be your typical retail job with the addition of taking reservations and selling propane.
King is working two days a week at the campground again this summer. When the grass starts growing he will be doing lawn maintenance. In the meantime he is splitting wood and bundling it for the campground to sell. He goes to bed early. I wait for the sun to set before I crawl under the covers.
So far our time back in Michigan has not been disappointing.
My sister and I attended the Elton John concert last week at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids. The concert is the reason we left California two weeks early this year. My son had originally purchased tickets for himself, his wife, one of his daughters and me to attend the concert. It would have been a three-generational thing. But sometime during the winter he realized the the concert was to be performed during spring break while they also had plans for spending spring break in the south.
He was able to sell two of his tickets and I was able to invite my sister to go with me to the concert.
It was a perfect bonding experience for us. We are two long-time Elton John fans. I have to say the performance did not disappoint. I complain about being tired after having to stock shelves for a few hours a day, Elton John is 75 years old and performed for 2.5 hours, non-stop. He mentioned while on stage he had performed at 170 concerts so far this year and had more than 200 left to go. I should have such energy.
King and our sons have already played golf – 27 holes on Sunday. King is still napping today. None of us are as young as we once were.
And so it goes as we settle into our summer routine: Work, relaxation, naps and grocery shopping. It’s not all bad. In fact it’s quite good.
