Wayland’s newest downtown business continues the more than four decades battle against “The Corner Curse.”

The Retro Room, a place to buy and sell old recordings and electronics devices plans to have a grand opening Sept. 2 at 102 W. Superior St., where the historic Gurney’s IGA building stood until 1974. Since Walt Gurney closed the grocery store, the building has housed a variety of businesses, all of which failed in less than five years.

But last year the Uccello family, famous for establishing the Salvino’s Restaurant on West Superior Street, apparently have become interested in a sort of urban renewal project to restore and renew a very visible slice of Wayland history going back more than 100 years. Salvatore Uccello and his family are engineering a sort of urban renewal project at the northwest corner of Superior and Main.

The building too often over the last 43 years has been vacant.

After next door neighbor Giuseppe’s Pizza was severely damaged by fire, the Uccello family bought the building to use for preparing food and plans are proceeding for some kind of restaurant and already for the Retro Room.

The upstairs will continue to be used for remodeled and updated apartments.

Billed as dealing in music decor and more, The Retro Room welcomes customers’ trade-ins to update their home selection. =”We offer top dollar for your previously loved records… Looking for something old that’s new again?  We have several electronics to choose from, including, turntables, receivers and speakers.”
