Construction of roundabout occurs at Kalamazoo-84th

Brenner Construction of Hopkins is doing the work on the closest roundabout to northeastern Allegan County. The work is continuing apace at 84th Street and Kalamazoo Avenue. Behind those trees is an old schoolhouse some people turned into a home, with a bell tower above. There is a new high school at this intersection now, plus substation for Kent County Sheriff. It used to be a four-way stop that was plagued by traffic crashes and fatalities.

The new South Christian HS is about a half mile north up Kalamazoo Ave on the west side of the road. The Kent County Sheriff is on the SW corner and Cornerstone Church has drives from 84th St and Kalamazoo Ave on the NE corner.

The 80+ acres behind the converted school house on the SE has recently been approved for single and multi-family housing along with retail after the developer won a law suit in an appeal.

Having driven in Europe, I have seen traffic circles in major intersections be very efficient compared to 4 way stops and traffic lights. It will take drivers some time to adjust to the change.

  2. I wish More roundabouts were in place at more four way stops, especially 142nd and division, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve dealt with a person sitting behind the the car at the stop sign who thinks it’s there turn to follow that car without coming to a stop.
